APS 2007-08; Ms. DiVincenzo Student Name ______________________
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
In order to establish good teacher/student relationships in the classroom, I find it helpful to outline my class procedures at the beginning of the term. Please read and discuss the following with your parents or guardians and sign BOTH outlines in the appropriate places. Return ONE copy to me for a homework grade and place the other in your folder. If you have any questions, please ask for an explanation.
Please bring to class every day:
1. Your text book COVERED. Also,
2. Your Portfolio. Your Portfolio is a 1½ inch binder (yes, it must be this large) with dividers. The sections are: Section 1: Notes; Section 2: Worksheets; Section 3: Labs; Section 4: Tests & Quizzes. The Portfolio is a very important organizing tool for this course. It is graded quarterly and the grade is counted as a Test.
3. Two sharpened pencils. Pencils are always required for calculations and tests. Please have a good supply of pencils.
4. A calculator. Graphing is not required—a cheap, simple calculator will suffice. This is needed only for the Physics Semester of the Course.
5. A small supply of looseleaf paper for the Notes section of your Portfolio.
Website, “The Blog”: http://aps2007-08.tripod.com/APS
This is the Website/Blog for my APS classes. You are required to check it periodically. Every week I post the coming week's plans so that you know what is coming or, what you missed if you were absent. When you are absent, do not ask me what you missed unless you have checked the Blog first. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to make up work.
There is the way to access the Blog through the MRHS Website:

Click on Homework (at the bottom of the page); Click on Science; Click on APS.
PARENTS TAKE NOTE:
You have a unique window into the mysterious world of your son's or daughter's progress in Science by reading the Bulletin Board.

For Each Unit of Study:
Read the text before it is discussed in class.
Prepare questions to ask in class.
Begin working on the worksheets and/or problems assigned as soon as we have discussed it in class. It is essential for you to do the homework. It is the only way for you to understand the material and to do well on the tests.
Grading: Periodically I issue Progress Reports which are sent home to the Parents/Guardians for their signature. The breakdown of the Quarter's grading is as follows:
Tests (40%) will be announced well in advance and usually cover a chapter or unit. I urge you to keep track of your grades in your copybook. You will get to see your tests but often will not get to keep them.
Quizzes (20%) may or may not be announced and cover a particular concept.
For tests and quizzes: Grades will be posted on the wall usually on the day after the test/quiz.
If you are absent on the day a test/quiz is given, and you know of the test, be ready to take it on the day you return.
Lab Write-Ups (25%) are due one school day after the experiment is performed. Data will often be shared with one or more partners but calculations and write ups must be independent. These are subject to the same lateness penalties as homework assignments.
Homework/Classwork (15%)
Homework will be subject to collection at any time on or after its due date.
If you have trouble with a problem or question at home, ask to have it done on the board or discussed in class. When you are satisfied that you understand the solution or concept, write it up. Do not delay getting help. Late homework is subject to penalty: ten points are deducted for every day that it is late.
You will receive a homework grade of 100% by doing the following:
1. Prepare your homework according to directions (complete sentences or, for word problems, use the 7-point format outlined on the classroom bulletin board.)
2. Submit correct answers written in proper English with proper spelling.
3. Have your work ready for collection on time. Late or missing work will have a very bad effect on your grade point average.
The Course Grade is determined as follows (this formula is used school-wide-- all courses use this same formula): 20%, Quarter 1; 20%, Quarter 2; 20%, Quarter 3; 20%, Quarter 4; 10% Midterm Exam; 10%, Final Exam.
If you wish to see me, I am available in room S-05 every day before school at 6:30AM. Do not hesitate to see me any time with any problem you may have.
